General Questions About Instagram Reels

1. What are Instagram Reels?

  • Instagram Reels are short, engaging videos that allow businesses to showcase their expertise, projects, and services dynamically.
  • They can include music, effects, text overlays, and voiceovers to make content more engaging.

2. How long can Instagram Reels be?

  • Instagram Reels can be between 15 seconds and 3 minutes long, but only since January 2025. Before then, Reels used to be limited to 90 seconds. This gives businesses plenty of time to showcase their work.
  • For quick and impactful content—like product teasers or brief updates—15 to 30 seconds is the ideal length. It allows you to grab attention, deliver your message, and wrap it up before losing your audience.
  • If your goal is to tell a story, provide a tutorial, or explain something more detailed, extending your Reel to 60 or 90 seconds keeps viewers engaged without feeling rushed.
  • But what about videos over 90 seconds? Instagram isn’t a fan. At a recent conference, Instagram’s team highlighted that longer videos could “hurt distribution,” meaning they may not reach as many people as shorter ones. Why? If a viewer doesn’t watch the entire video, even if they spent more time watching it, the algorithm views incomplete viewing as a sign that the content wasn’t engaging enough and can limit your reach.

Tip: Create a Reel long enough to effectively deliver your message but short enough to capture and keep your audience’s attention. (Source Socialinsider Blog)

3. What is the difference between Instagram Reels and Stories?

  • Reels stay permanently on your profile and the Explore page, helping you reach new customers over time.
  • Stories disappear after 24 hours (unless saved in Highlights) and are mostly for engaging with your current followers rather than reaching new audiences.

4. How do Instagram Reels differ from TikTok videos?

  • Instagram Reels are designed to boost visibility within the Instagram ecosystem, making them ideal if your business is already active on Instagram.
  • TikTok videos have a more casual, trend-driven approach and cater to a younger, entertainment-focused audience.
  • For construction companies, Instagram Reels provide a better way to connect with local customers and showcase high-quality projects, while TikTok may work well for viral, fun, or educational content. You can also showcase the results of high-quality projects on TikTok, so why not post on both networks?

5. Can I schedule Instagram Reels in advance?

  • Yes! You can schedule Instagram Reels using Meta Business Suite or third-party tools like Later, Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Agorapulse, or Buffer.
  • For construction businesses, planning Reels in advance allows you to coordinate content with project timelines, ensuring fresh and relevant posts.
  • Scheduling helps maintain consistency, which is crucial for growing your audience.

6. What type of content do construction businesses use to increase engagement, new followers, and leads?

7. What are the best practices for using Reels in a business strategy?

To maximize the impact of Instagram Reels for your business, follow these key strategies:

  • Post consistently – Aim for 1–5 Reels per week to stay relevant.
  • Post during peak hours based on audience habits – Use platform analytics as a guide while considering your target market’s lifestyle (e.g., young families may be online at different times than professionals)
  • Use high-quality video & lighting – Blurry, dark footage gets ignored. (Find out more later in this article)
  • Keep it short & hook viewers immediately – The first 3 seconds should grab attention.
  • Educate, entertain, or inspire – Focus on value, not just promotions.
  • Leverage hashtags & keywords – Use industry-specific hashtags and searchable captions.
  • Encourage interaction – Ask questions in captions or create polls in Reels stories.
  • Repurpose content – Share Reels on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube Shorts for wider reach.
  • Use strong CTAs – Download this guide, Subscribe to receive more of this, Go to my website for more like this, or Go to our website to try our quiz, Get a free consultation, Get a free quote…etc.

Creating & Editing Instagram Reels

1. How do I create an Instagram Reel?

  • Open the Instagram app, tap the “+” button, and select Reel.
  • Record clips by holding the record button or upload pre-recorded footage.
  • Use built-in tools like music, text overlays, effects, and speed controls to enhance your video.
  • Once edited, add a caption, hashtags, and a cover image before posting.

2. What are the best dimensions and aspect ratios for Reels?

  • Instagram Reels should be in a 9:16 aspect ratio (vertical format) for full-screen viewing.
  • The recommended size is 1080 x 1920 pixels, ensuring high-quality visuals.
  • Keep key elements centered since Instagram crops the top and bottom when displaying Reels in the feed.

3. How do I add text, music, or effects to my Reel?

  • After recording or uploading your video, tap the “Aa” icon to add text.
  • Select the music note icon to choose from Instagram’s audio library (or use original sounds).
  • Use filters, transitions, and stickers from Instagram’s Effects Library to enhance visuals.
  • For renovation businesses, add text overlays to highlight project phases (e.g., “Demo Day,” “Final Touches”) and make the content more informative.

4. Can I edit an Instagram Reel after posting it?

Unfortunately, you can’t directly edit the video content of a Reel once it’s published on Instagram, but you can Remix your Reel and post it again with those changes. Remixing allows you to add voiceovers, text, stickers, and more. You’ll probably want to delete the old version to avoid duplicate content.

However, there are a few things you can edit after publishing:

  • Cover Image: You can change the cover image of your Reel to a different still by clicking in the bottom right on the 3 dots and “Manage”, then “Edit”. Click on the cover image and upload a new image from your camera roll.
  • Tags: You can tag or untag people in your Reel.
  • Location: You can add or change the location tag for your Reel.

5. How do I make a Reel from existing videos?

  • Tap the “+” button on Instagram, select Reel, and upload videos from your camera roll.
  • Trim and arrange the clips, then add music, text, or effects for a polished look.

6. What are the best practices for recording high-quality videos?

Camera settings

  • Use cinematic mode to create a blurred background for a professional look.
  • Turn on grid lines to keep the subject properly framed at all times.
  • Film vertically to maximize screen space on Reels. If you need a horizontal format, step back while recording to capture a wider frame. This allows you to reframe and crop the video during editing without losing important details.
  • The newer the phone, the better the image quality—use the latest model if possible.

Lighting

  • Natural light is ideal, but avoid direct sunlight to prevent overexposure, squinting, and reflections.
  • On sunny days, position yourself sideways to the sun for balanced lighting and contrast on the face.
  • For indoor filming, use artificial lights like ring lights (check out this one on Amazon). Avoid overly bright lights that cause harsh shadows.

Audio quality

  • Use a good microphone (like the Lavallier brand) for the best sound quality—clear audio improves audience retention.
  • Avoid background noise and ensure the speaker’s volume is clear.
  • In 2025, social media audiences expect high-quality audio—low-quality sound can cause people to skip the video.
  • Great microphone choices: Neewer C-28 and DJI square mics for professional clarity.

Stability

  • Most modern phones have built-in stabilization, but a tripod is essential for solo filming.
  • Adjust the tripod’s height and distance for the best framing—standing is preferred for better voice projection.
  • For moving shots, use a stabilizer (e.g. DJI Osmo Mobile) to achieve smooth, drone-like motion.

Environment & framing

  • Standing up improves voice projection—just like singers do.
  • Maintain a good distance from the background to create depth and avoid distractions.
  • Choose clean, professional backdrops that enhance your brand and message.
  • Use various angles, zooms, and panning to make videos more dynamic.
  • Incorporate B-roll footage to break up monotone narration and reinforce key points.
  • Show visuals that match the topic (e.g., if discussing glass fences, show installed fences).
  • Keep the speaker in close-up so viewers feel directly addressed.
  • Use 3x cinematic zoom instead of filming too close.

Music and voiceovers

  • Use trending sounds and music or voiceovers to make your content more engaging and discoverable.
  • Looking for a professional voiceover without the high costs? Try ElevenLabs—an AI-powered tool that generates lifelike voiceovers from your text. You can even record your own voice, and it will replicate your tone and style! Plus, it can translate your audio into over 32 languages.

Transitions & editing best practices

  • Master basic editing techniques like cuts, transitions, and filters to add energy and style.
  • Use editing apps like Splice, CapCut, Captions, and VN that offer a variety of transitions, filters, caption options, and cutting tools.
  • Stay updated on trending transitions from social media and incorporate them into your videos.
  • Develop a consistent style so viewers can instantly recognize your brand’s videos.
  • Apply transitions strategically—not just between scenes but also at the beginning and end of videos.
  • Enhance audience retention by using engaging transitions, and encouraging viewers to rewatch your video.
  • A well-placed transition at the end can create a “loop effect,” increasing the chances of repeat views.

Branding consistency

  • Add relevant images or video clips to support spoken content and enhance credibility.
  • Break up long monologues with dynamic visuals for better engagement.
  • Use brand colors, fonts, and filters consistently across all videos. A recognizable editing style helps audiences immediately identify your videos. Changing styles too fast can hurt engagement and confuse your audience.

Thumbnails & Covers

1. What are the recommended thumbnail sizes for Instagram Reels?

The best thumbnail (cover image) size for Instagram Reels is:

  • 1080 x 1920 pixels (9:16 ratio)

Safe zone for text & logos:

  • Centered within 1080 x 1350 pixels to fit properly in the feed preview.

Avoid placing important details near the edges, as they may be cropped in different views.

Tip: Use an app like VN to create a custom thumbnail that will work on all social media platforms!

2. How do I change the cover image of my Instagram Reel?

Instagram allows you to change the cover image while uploading a Reel but once posted, it cannot be edited.

To set a cover before posting:

  1. Tap “Edit Cover” before sharing your Reel.
  2. Choose a frame from the video or upload a custom image.
  3. Adjust the positioning for the best display.

🚨 Note: You cannot change the cover once the Reel is live. If you need to, you must delete and re-upload the Reel.

3. Can I upload a custom thumbnail for a Reel?

Yes! Instagram allows businesses and creators to upload a custom image as a cover for Reels.

How to add a custom thumbnail:

  1. When posting a Reel, tap “Edit Cover”.
  2. Select “Add from Gallery”.
  3. Upload your custom-designed thumbnail.

4. Why does my Reel cover look blurry after posting?

If your Reel cover appears blurry, it may be due to:

  • Instagram compression – Upload at 1080 x 1920 pixels for the best clarity.
  • Low-resolution thumbnails – If you use a low-quality image, it will appear pixelated.
  • Uploading via third-party apps – Some apps reduce quality when exporting. Try uploading directly from your phone’s gallery.
  • Instagram auto-cropping – Covers may be resized for the feed preview. Keep text/logos centered to avoid cropping.

Engagement & Algorithm

1. How does the Instagram Reels algorithm work?

  • Watch time & completion rate – Reels that are watched to the end (or replayed) rank higher.
  • Engagement signals – Likes, comments, shares, and saves all boost visibility.
  • Content relevance – Instagram assesses user interests based on their past interactions to show them Reels they’re likely to enjoy.
  • Audio trends & effects – Using trending sounds and Instagram-native effects can increase reach.
  • Consistency & frequency – Regular posting signals activity and relevance, keeping your content in front of more people.

2. How can I make my Reels go viral?

  • Use Instagram SEO – Search on the Explore page or through the search bar to find keywords to add to your captions, profile, and subtitles. This will keep your account discoverable.
  • Start with a strong hook – The first 3 seconds should capture attention (e.g., “Here’s the biggest mistake homeowners make…”).
  • Leverage trends – Use trending audio, effects, and hashtags relevant to your industry.
  • Keep it short & engaging – 15-30 seconds performs best.
  • Use captions & text overlays – Many users watch without sound. Adding text helps retain attention.
  • Encourage interaction and start conversations – Ask a question in your caption or overlay (e.g., “Would you do this to your kitchen? 👇”)
  • Post at peak times – For construction and renovation, weekday evenings and weekends work best.
  • Cross-promote on stories & your feed – Share your Reel in multiple places to boost initial engagement.
  • Add relevant hashtags to your posts – Use a mix of high and low-competition hashtags for discoverability (Source: Later)
  • Answer comments – Did you know you can now answer a comment with a Reel? What a great way to communicate with your audience and create more relevant content.

3. How long does it take for a Reel to gain traction?

Reels can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks to gain traction. Unlike feed posts, Reels can resurface days or weeks later if they gain engagement over time.

Important note: This kind of information is often based on anecdotal observations by creators and social media marketers rather than being formally published by Instagram itself. Instagram’s algorithms are constantly changing, and they don’t typically release detailed breakdowns of how they work.

Typical Timeline:

  • First 24 hours: Instagram tests your Reel on a small audience.
  • Day 2-7: If engagement is good, it expands reach to a wider group.
  • Up to 30 days: A Reel can go viral weeks after posting if people start sharing and saving it.

4. What helps a Reel gain more traction over time?

  • Consistently resharing it in Stories
  • Encouraging comments and saves (this tells Instagram it’s valuable)
  • Engage with your audience – reply to comments and questions

    • Ask open-ended questions in replies to keep the conversation going.
    • Use keywords and emojis in comments to make responses more engaging.
    • Like and pin top comments to highlight audience contributions.

5. Does posting Reels too often or too little affect reach?

Yes! Your posting frequency impacts reach:

The following figures are often based on anecdotal evidence, creator experiments, and observations within the social media marketing community.

Too many reels (5+ per day):

  • This can lead to burnout and lower engagement per post.
  • Instagram may throttle your reach if you post too frequently without engagement.

Too few feel (1 per month or less):

  • The algorithm deprioritizes inactive accounts.
  • You miss out on trends and engagement momentum.

Best posting frequency for maximum reach:

  • 3-5 Reels per week = Optimal for growth
  • 1-2 Reels per week = Good for steady engagement

Pro tip: If engagement drops, take a short break (2-3 days) and then come back with a high-quality Reel.

6. Do longer or shorter Reels perform better?

Both short and long Reels can perform well, depending on content and audience behavior.

Short Reels (7-15 sec) – Best for quick tips, fast transformations, and trending sounds.

  • High retention & repeat views
  • Instagram boosts videos with high completion rates

Long Reels (20-60 sec) – Best for tutorials, storytelling, and detailed home renovation projects.

  • More in-depth engagement
  • Works well if the story holds the attention

Best practice: Mix both formats and analyze your Insights to see what works best for your audience.

Pro tip: If posting a long Reel, keep the first 3 seconds ultra-engaging to prevent drop-off.

7. Why is my Instagram Reel not getting views?

  • Low engagement early on – If Instagram shows your Reel to a test audience and they don’t engage, it limits further reach.
  • Poor video quality – Blurry or pixelated videos get deprioritized. Always upload in HD.
  • No hook in the first 3 Seconds – Viewers scroll past quickly if your content doesn’t grab attention immediately.
  • Wrong hashtags or captions – Using too many broad or irrelevant hashtags can prevent your video from reaching the right audience.
  • Muted or no sound – Instagram favors Reels with original audio or trending music.
  • Shadowban or community guidelines violation – If your account is restricted or your content doesn’t follow guidelines, the reach can be suppressed.
  • Tip for construction businesses: Use a strong visual hook, like a “big reveal” or a surprising demo (e.g., “You won’t believe this renovation hack!”).

Hashtags & Discoverability

1. What are the best hashtags to use for Instagram Reels?

The best hashtags depend on your industry, content type, and target audience. For the construction and renovation niche, here are some high-performing hashtag ideas:

  • General construction & renovation:
    #HomeRenovation #ConstructionLife #BeforeAndAfter #DreamHome #LuxuryHomes
  • Specific to services:
    #KitchenRemodel #BathroomRenovation #CustomHome #DeckBuilding #RoofingExperts
  • Trending & engagement-boosting hashtags:
    #DIYHome #Renovationtips #HomeImprovement #ContractorLife #HouseGoals

2. How many hashtags should I use on a Reel, and which ones should I use?

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags, but using 5–10 highly relevant hashtags tends to perform best. Mix High & Low Competition Tags – A blend of trending and less competitive hashtags improves discoverability. Ensure that hashtags are directly related to your video’s topic for better visibility.

📌 Best strategy:

  • 2-3 industry-specific hashtags (e.g., #HomeRenovation, #CustomHomes)
  • 2-3 trending or viral hashtags (e.g., #BeforeAndAfter, #DIYProjects)
  •  2-3 location-based hashtags (e.g., #TorontoBuilder, #MontrealConstruction)
  • 1-2 branded hashtags (e.g., #YourCompanyName, #ExpertRenovation)

3. Do hashtags help increase Reel views?

Yes, they generally do, but only if used strategically. Hashtags can help Instagram categorize your content and show it to users interested in that topic.

What Hashtags Do for Reels:

  • Improve discoverability – Your Reel can appear in search results and on the Explore page.
  • Increase engagement – Users searching for renovation ideas or construction services may find your content.
  • Reach new audiences – Instagram’s algorithm pushes Reels with relevant hashtags to users who have shown interest in similar topics.

📌 Avoid: Using only generic hashtags like #Reels or #Viral, as they are too broad and competitive.

4. Where should I put my hashtags: in the caption or comments?

Hashtags in the caption are indexed faster: This is the core argument.  While Instagram doesn’t explicitly confirm this, many social media marketers and creators have observed that hashtags in captions seem to have a more immediate impact on reach and discoverability.  This is likely because Instagram’s algorithm processes the caption content immediately upon posting.

Captions boost initial reach: This is generally accepted.  The first hour or so after posting is crucial for a Reel’s performance.  Engagement during this initial period signals to the algorithm that the content is interesting, which can lead to wider reach.  Hashtags in the caption contribute to this initial boost by making the Reel discoverable from the moment it’s posted.

Hashtags in comments may not be recognized immediately: This is the other side of the coin.  While hashtags in comments do work, they might not be indexed as quickly as those in the caption.  This delay could mean missing out on that crucial initial boost in reach.

Cleaner caption strategy:  This is a valid aesthetic preference.  Some creators prefer cleaner captions without hashtags.  If you choose this route, posting the hashtags in the first comment immediately after posting is the best approach.  This helps to mitigate the potential delay in indexing.

5. How do I find the best-performing hashtags for my niche?

Use these methods to find the best hashtags:

  1. Check competitors – Look at successful businesses in the renovation & construction space and note their hashtags.
  2. Instagram search bar – Type a keyword like “renovation” and see suggested hashtags.
  3. Explore page & Reels tab – Look at trending Reels in your niche and see what hashtags they use.
  4. Third-party tools – Use tools like Hashtagify, Display Purposes, or Instagram Insights to analyze hashtag performance.
  5. Test & analyze – Track which hashtags bring the most views, saves, and shares in your Instagram Insights.

📌 Pro tip: Keep a list of 20-30 best-performing hashtags and rotate them across your Reels when they fit with the content strategy.

1. Can I add a link sticker to a Reel like in Stories?

No, link stickers are only available in Instagram Stories, not Reels.

  • Share that Reel to Stories and add a link sticker in the Story.
  • Save the Story as a Highlight so followers can always find the link later.

2. Are there workarounds for adding links to Reels (e.g., bio links, captions)?

Yes! Since Instagram doesn’t allow clickable links in Reels, use these proven workarounds:

  • Link in bio: Use tools like Linktree, Beacons, or Tap.bio to create a landing page with multiple links.
  • Pin a comment with the link: Even though it’s not clickable, users can copy and paste.
  • DM for a link: Example: “Want a free renovation estimate? DM us ‘Quote’ and we’ll send you the link!”
  • Direct to Instagram Stories: After posting a Reel, share it on your Story and add a link sticker.
  • Use Instagram Shopping (if applicable): If you sell home improvement products, you can tag items directly in Reels.

📌 Best practice for contractors:
Instead of just saying, “Check the link in our bio,” be specific:
👉 “Visit our website (YourWebsite.com) for a FREE project quote! 🚀 Link in bio!”

Reels & Business Features

1. How do I add product tags to an Instagram Reel?

If you have an Instagram Shop, you can tag products in your Reels, allowing viewers to tap and shop directly.

Steps to Tag Products in a Reel:

  1. Tap to select Reels or swipe to the Instagram camera and tap Reels.
  2. Create your reel. You can record your reel or upload an existing video from your phone.
  3. Tap Next.
  4. Select a cover image and add a caption. Tap Cover and slide the image at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Tap More options.
  6. Tap Tag Products and select the product(s) or collection you’d like to feature.
  7. Tap Done.
  8. Tap Share to publish your reel.

(Source: Instagram)

📌 Best for renovation & construction businesses:

  • If you sell home improvement products, tag items like flooring materials, cabinetry, lighting, or appliances in your Reels.
  • Example: “Upgrade your kitchen with these custom cabinets! 🏡✨ Tap the product tag to shop now!”

2. Can I link a Reel to my Instagram Shop?

Yes! You can link Reels directly to your Instagram Shop by:

  • Tagging products in the Reel – This makes items shoppable within the video.
  • Adding a link in your bio – Guide viewers to your Shop tab with a CTA like “Check out our full product line in our bio!”
  • Sharing the Reel to Stories – Use a link sticker in Stories to direct traffic to your Shop.
  • Pinning the Reel to your profile grid – Keeps shoppable content easily accessible. Just click on the Reel and hold; a menu will pop up. Choose the option to pin it.

3. What are the best call-to-action (CTA) strategies for Reels?

A strong CTA increases engagement & conversions. Here are some high-performing CTA strategies:

For lead generation & website traffic:

  • “Want a free quote? Click the link in our bio!
  • “DM us ‘Consult’ to get started!

For sales & product promotions:

  • “Shop now—limited stock available! 🚀”
  • “Tap the product tag to learn more!”

For engagement & community building:

  •  “What do you think of this remodel? Comment below! 👇”
  • “Tag a friend who needs this renovation idea! 🔄”

📌 Pro tip: Use on-screen text, voiceovers, and captions to reinforce your CTA!

Reels in Instagram Ads & Promotions

1. Should I use paid Instagram ads for my business in 2025?

Yes, paid social media ads are essential due to the decline in organic reach, but how you use them determines whether they will enhance or limit your visibility. A strategic approach ensures that ads work alongside organic engagement rather than replacing it.

The reality of organic vs. paid reach in 2025

  • Organic reach has declined significantly as platforms prioritize content from ad spenders and high-engagement accounts.
  • Paid ads do not automatically reduce organic reach, but businesses that neglect organic engagement may see weaker unpaid visibility over time.
  • The best approach is to use ads to expand reach while maintaining strong engagement on organic posts.

How to run ads without hurting organic reach

  • Boost high-performing organic content – Promote posts that already generate engagement, as the algorithm will continue pushing them even after the ad runs.
  • Use ads for engagement, not just sales
    • Invest in engagement-based ads (likes, comments, shares) to improve future organic reach.
    • Selling-focused ads should be balanced with content that encourages interaction.
  • Maintain a mix of paid and organic engagement
    • Running ads consistently does not harm organic reach, as long as organic posts still generate comments, shares, and interactions.
    • Businesses that rely only on paid ads without community engagement may struggle to gain unpaid visibility.
  • Leverage retargeting & lookalike audiences
    • Retargeting past engagers and website visitors increases ad efficiency.
    • Lookalike audiences help reach new but relevant users without relying only on cold traffic ads.
  • Use Story & Reels ads for cost-effective reach
    • Reels and Stories ads cost less per impression than feed ads and are prioritized by the algorithm.
    • Since Instagram already pushes Reels organically, these ads can help reinforce visibility.
  • Rotate ad creatives, not just ad spend
    • Taking breaks from ad spending is not necessary if content remains fresh and engaging.
    • Regularly updating video creatives, messaging, and visuals prevents ad fatigue and ensures continued performance.
  • Avoid over-reliance on ads without organic strategy
    • Boosting every post is not harmful if engagement remains high, but relying only on ads without meaningful content weakens organic reach over time.
    • Encourage user interactions on unpaid content to maintain a balance.

2. Can I boost an Instagram Reel?

Yes! You can boost an Instagram Reel to increase its reach and engagement, but for better targeting capabilities, we recommend you create your ads with Meta Ads Manager.

Important to know before boosting your ad:

If you’re based in or intend to target audiences in the US and want to create an ad campaign that relates to credit, employment, housing, social issues or political ads, you must choose the category that best describes your ads from the Special Ad Category dropdown menu.

Starting February 2024, an Apple service fee of 30% of your total ad payment, before any taxes and local fees, may apply when you boost in the Instagram iOS app from your iPhone or iPad. This fee is retained by Apple, not Instagram or Meta. Learn more about avoiding Apple service fees when boosting on Instagram.

Businesses can boost their reels to turn them into ads to reach new audiences and drive engagement. Boosted Reels appear in the Reels tab, Explore, Feed, and Stories. You can also learn how to boost an Instagram feed post or boost an Instagram Story.

Before you begin

  • Reels must be less than 3 minutes and have a full-screen (9:16) vertical aspect ratio.
  • Reels with copyrighted music, GIFs, interactive stickers, or camera filters from a third party can’t be boosted.
  • Reels shared to Facebook can’t be boosted.

How to boost Instagram Reels:

  • Go to your profile.
  • Tap the reel you’d like to boost.
  • Below the reel, tap Boost.
  • Fill in the details of your ad by selecting a Goal (what results you’d like from this ad), Audience (who you want to reach), Budget (how much you want to spend daily), and Duration (how long you want your ad to run). Tap Next once you’ve completed these details.
  • To complete your ad, tap Boost reel under Review your ad.

Once you’ve tapped Boost reel, your ad will be submitted for review to make sure it meets Instagram’s ad policies. Your ad will begin running after it’s been reviewed and approved. You’ll receive a notification in your Activity Feed after you submit an ad for review, when it’s getting reviewed, if it’s approved or disapproved, and when the campaign ends.

3. Create your ad as usual, filling in details for your campaign, budget and schedule, audience, and optimization and delivery.

4. When you get to the Placements section, select Advantage+ Placements to automatically include Reels ads in your campaigns. You can also select Manual placements if you’d like to choose specific placements for your campaign and include Reels among your selections. To select Reels below Placements, select the dropdown menu next to Stories and click to check the box next to Instagram Reels.

5. Select a Call to action and finish creating your ad.

4. Can I use a Reel for retargeting audiences?

Yes! Reel ads work great for retargeting users who have:

  • Visited your website but didn’t convert.
  • Engaged with your Instagram posts but haven’t messaged you.
  • Watched your previous Reels but didn’t follow or click.

5. Do Reels ads perform better than standard feed ads?

The truth: The information you often see is based on anecdotal evidence from marketers, case studies, and general observations about how users interact with different ad formats. Instagram (Meta) doesn’t publicly release detailed performance data comparing Reels ads directly to feed ads.

BUT Reels ads generally outperform feed ads in engagement, reach, and conversions because:

  • Higher engagement:  This is a common observation.  Reels’ autoplay format encourages longer watch times, which can lead to higher engagement metrics (likes, comments, shares, saves).  This aligns with the general trend of video content performing well on social media.  Many social media marketing blogs discuss the higher engagement rates of video content.
  • Full-screen experience:  The immersive, full-screen format of Reels ads minimizes distractions and can make calls to action (CTAs) more prominent.  This is a logical argument based on user experience.  Think about how you interact with a full-screen video ad versus a smaller image ad in a feed.
  • Algorithm boost:  While Instagram doesn’t explicitly confirm giving Reels a “boost,” it’s generally understood that the algorithm favors video content.  This is reflected in the emphasis on Reels and the features designed to promote them.  Again, this is based on observation and how the platform is designed.
  • More organic feel:  Reels ads that blend seamlessly with organic content tend to perform better.  Users are more receptive to ads that don’t feel overly promotional.  This is a widely discussed principle in advertising and content marketing.  Look for articles on “native advertising” or “in-feed video ads.”

Sharing & Visibility

1. Can I post Reels to my Instagram feed?

Yes! You can post Reels both on your profile and in your feed.

2. Who can see my Instagram Reels?

Visibility depends on your settings:

  • Public account – Anyone on Instagram, including non-followers, can see your Reels.
  • Private account – Only approved followers can see them.
  • For business accounts, keeping your profile public ensures maximum exposure.

3. Can I share Instagram Reels on Facebook?

Yes! You can automatically or manually share Reels to Facebook, increasing reach across both platforms. See how in this article on Instagram.

4. How do I enable or disable comments on my Reels?

You can manage comments per Reel or for all Reels:

Per Reel:

  • Go to your posted Reel
  • Tap the three dots (⋮) → “Manage” → Toggle comments on/off

For All Reels (note that you can only limit comments for Reels automatically):

  1. Menu → Comments
  2. Adjust who can comment (Everyone, People you are following, Followers)

Why disable comments? If a Reel is getting spam or negativity, disabling comments can maintain brand image.

Reels & Analytics

1. Where can I find insights and analytics for my Reels?

Instagram provides detailed analytics for Reels through the Insights section. Here’s how to access them:

On Individual Reels:

  • Go to your profile → Open the Reel you want to analyze.
  • Tap the three dots (⋮) → Select “View Insights.”

For Overall Account Performance:

  • Go to your profile → Tap on the hamburger menu and select “Insights.”
  • Click on a specific metric for a more detailed breakdown.

2. What do the metrics mean in Reels insights

  • Views: The number of times your reel starts to play or replays.
  • Watch time: The total amount of time your reel was played, including any time spent replaying the reel.
  • Accounts reached: The number of unique accounts that have seen your reel on screen at least once, whether or not your reel was played. Accounts reached are different from views, which may include multiple views of your reel by the same accounts. This metric is estimated and in development.
  • Average watch time: The average amount of time spent playing your reel. This is calculated by the watch time divided by the number of initial views. An initial view is when your reel starts to play for the first time in a reel session.
  • Follows: This is how many accounts started following you as a result of viewing your reel. (Source: Instagram)

3. How do I know if my Reels are performing well?

Your Reels are successful if they:

  • Have a high completion rate (viewers watch until the end)
  • Get above-average reach compared to your other posts
  • Receive high engagement (likes, comments, shares, saves)
  • Bring new followers to your profile
  • Generate direct messages, website clicks, or inquiries

Industry benchmarks for smaller accounts:

1k-5k followers:

  • 20% average view rate
  • 590 impressions
  • 308 Reel views on average
  • 2-3 comments per Reel,
  • 0.50% engagement rate

🚀 Pro tip: Compare performance across different types of Reels (educational, behind-the-scenes, time-lapse, etc.) to see what works best.
